SUPPORT USW JOBS AND THE LOCAL PENNSYLVANIA ECONOMY

We can be both energy efficient and supportive of our USW brothers and sisters by buying US made products. This is just one example. Make the effort to find out where the products you buy are manufactured.  It may take a little extra effort to avoid the 'made in China' label, but it can make a difference!

We Need Your Help

Foreclosures, Shut-downs, Layoffs and Unemployment

Many of us know a friend or family member who is laid off or out of work. Maybe it is you.

It may be a while before this incoming government can pass legislation that will stem the flow of job losses and reverse this downward trend.

The United Steelworkers (USW), with the help of the United Steelworkers Press Association (USPA) members, would like to begin a project to assist those members and their families who are laid off or could be laid off. The project would involve the collection of information of state, municipal, community or non-profit agencies that could assist workers who are displaced and make this information available them on the USW Web site.

The project will be listed state-by-state to make it easier for people to find. Since this is such a massive project, we are asking for your help to retrieve any and all information that you can about your state, municipality or community agencies and then pass it along to the USPA Secretary Treasurer, jcoleman@usw.org.

It may be locations of food banks, or programs for the unemployed. It could be assistance programs or places that provide low-cost or free clothing. Do not be concerned about duplicating another person's information. We will sift through everything to make sure all information is made available.

In return, your information will be arranged by state and will be placed on a new Action page being developed for the USW Web site. This information will be downloadable for communicators to use in newsletters and on their Local Union Web sites. We all can play a part to help our brothers and sisters who could be struggling in their time of need.

The USPA Executive Board commends all members for their work during the 2008 elections and the donation of goodwill stories and articles over the holiday season. We urge all members to get involved with this worth-while project and thank members in advance.

So, here is what is required:

·        Exact name of agency, address and city. What the agency provides.

·        Web site of any agencies

·        Your name and contact information (if we need to get in touch with you

USW EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM AND 24-HOUR HOTLINE

OUR PURPOSE:

The USW Emergency Response Team supports local unions and our members after catastrophic accidents or fatalities.

OUR MISSION:

  • To provide family members and co-workers with critical incident stress debriefing and/or grief counseling
  • To investigate the root causes of the accident
  • To provide both legal information and assistance to the families

In the event of any fatal or life-altering injury to any of our members, the USW local should notify the staff representative (in this case, for local 670, Howard Miller) and the emergency response team immediately!

Please have the victim's name and local union number available when calling the hotline, as well as the name of the employer.  For help with other questions about workplace health and safety, please call the USW Health, Safety and Environmental Department at 412-562-2581.

Please do not use the hotline for routine requests
